Epictetus died c. 135 AD — everything is deep public domain. The translations
used here are 19th-century and long out of copyright.

| The Encheiridion, or Manual | encheiridion_long_pg10661.txt |
George Long, from A Selection from the Discourses of Epictetus with the Encheiridion (1877, repr.) | https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/10661 | high | PROOF WORK / bounded evidence pool. Complete Manual, 52 chapters (Roman I–LII in Long's numbering). Long's archaic forms and curly apostrophes preserved verbatim (another’s, skill’d, Cæsar). |
| A Selection from the Discourses of Epictetus (+ Encheiridion) | discourses_encheiridion_long_pg10661_full.txt |
George Long, same volume | https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/10661 | high | Reference only. Long's selected Discourses precede the Manual in the same book. Not part of the verbatim gate in v1 — the evidence pool is the Encheiridion alone. Kept so Discourses parallels can be cited by hand later with their own boundary policy. |
Why George Long, not Carter
The task allowed Elizabeth Carter (1758) or George Long. Long was chosen because
a single Gutenberg volume (#10661) carries both the Encheiridion and a
selection of the Discourses in one consistent translation and vocabulary — so if
the corpus is ever widened to the Discourses, the evidence pool stays uniform
(same rendering of prohairesis, phantasia, "things in our power"). Carter's
Enchiridion (Higginson's is also PD, #45109) would have forced a second
translator's idiom on any Discourses extension. One translator, one idiom.
Evidence-language decision
English (George Long) is the single evidence pool. Every > blockquote in
the vault is a verbatim, whitespace-normalized substring of
encheiridion_long_pg10661.txt, checked by scripts/verify_quotes.py.
Greek is used only as arbiter where a term's meaning is load-bearing: the
canonical terms (τὰ ἐφ' ἡμῖν, προαίρεσις, φαντασία, ἔκκλισις / ὄρεξις, καθῆκον)
are given in TERMINOLOGY.md from the standard text (Schenkl / Perseus, PD).
Long himself prints the Greek transliterations inline in brackets
([Greek: hormae], [Greek: echchlisis], [Greek: phantasion]), so his key
terms are anchored to the Greek within the corpus itself.
RU layer
No clean public-domain Russian translation of the Encheiridion was used in this
corpus (the widely circulated Russian versions are modern and non-PD). All
Russian renderings in this vault are our own careful, academic-leaning
translations from the Long English (checked against the Greek terms), marked
«перевод наш». English is the primary evidence pool; Russian never carries a
> blockquote and is never machine-matched.
