Notes on flattening
Epictetus, like Nietzsche and Franklin, has a heavy meme field. The most
distorted term is the first one: τὰ ἐφ' ἡμῖν is routinely flattened into a
managerial "circle of control" self-help slogan. In the corpus it is a strict
metaphysical partition — the faculty of judgment/choice on one side, everything
else (body, property, reputation, office) on the other (ch. I) — not a
motivational spectrum of "influence". Keep the partition binary.
Period tag: Epictetus taught c. 55–135 AD; there is one period, so notes carry
work: Encheiridion rather than a period tag.
